Cleanse your Drain!

That’s right, the title says it all. Your drain is just like you, requiring some cleansing and cleaning every once in a while. Imagine the junk that is thrown in it - hair, excess foods, soap residue and all sorts of rubbish that I would rather not imagine. Sometimes it can even emit unpleasant odor. Nasty!

The method I am about to share with you will save you from making a hole in your wallet. Who needs the plumber when you have a dynamic duo solution to unclog your drain - baking soda and vinegar, a match made in heaven! I must say that these two ingredients really pack a punch when you put them together. Allow me to cut to the chase. For this recipe you will need:

Baking Soda (1 cup)
White Vinegar (1 cup)
Hot Water (2 cups)

  1. Start by flushing your drain with 1 cup of hot water. Just pour it right down the drain.
  2. Then dump in the baking soda.
  3. Follow this with white vinegar. You’ll see the solution bubble and fizzle (ps: Don’t worry, that’s what’s going to break down the gunk. Eventually the bubbles will die)
  4. Let that sit for 15 to 30 minutes.
  5. Finally, pour in the last cup of hot water.Repeat if necessary.
Why this works: Baking soda is a terrific cleaning agent that is also great for absorbing foul odors and leaving your drain pipes smelling like a rose. Okay, maybe not a rose, but a whole lot better than they would otherwise. Vinegar on the other hand is a wonder cleaner. It contains acetic acid, which acts as an excellent organic solvent in removing the organic buildup of crud in pipes. Hot water causes the buildup of oil from foods found along the surface of the pipes to be flushed down. This if left untreated could lead to a clogged drain.

That’s all folks! Hope this helps.
